China has responded to former US President Donald Trump’s proposal of imposing tariffs, specifically addressing the issue of China’s relationship with Russia. Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized Trump’s recent suggestion of applying tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China. Yi emphasized China’s commitment to resolving sensitive matters through peaceful negotiations, effectively ruling out the possibility of reciprocal tariffs.
During a media conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as reported by China Daily, Wang Yi stated that war does not provide solutions to issues, and sanctions exacerbate existing problems. He firmly stated China’s stance against engaging in or planning any form of warfare, instead advocating for peace talks and emphasizing the importance of political solutions to critical issues through dialogue.
Wang Yi portrayed China as a responsible nation with a strong reputation for promoting peace and security. He underscored the importance of supporting multilateralism, reinforcing multilateral frameworks, and collectively upholding the principles of the UN Charter.
He further stated that with the ongoing chaos and conflicts worldwide, China and Europe should focus on collaboration rather than rivalry.
These remarks came in response to Trump’s call for additional tariffs on Chinese imports of Russian oil until the Ukraine conflict concludes. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, criticized NATO’s efforts to win the war and expressed disapproval of certain NATO members’ purchase of Russian oil.
Directly addressing NATO members, Trump claimed their actions significantly weaken their negotiating position and leverage with Russia.
