Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have been suspended by President Donald Trump due to what he terms “egregious behavior” by Canada, specifically referencing television advertisements critical of U.S. tariffs. The move comes shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signaled intentions to expand Canada’s export markets beyond the U.S. in light of tariff-related uncertainties. Trump declared on social media that the advertisements, including one featuring a fabricated message attributed to Ronald Reagan, were a deliberate effort to sway U.S. judicial outcomes. He stressed the vital role of tariffs in bolstering American national security and economic strength. Adding to the controversy, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute stated that the Government of Ontario had produced an ad campaign utilizing selective audio and video clips of President Reagan, misrepresenting his original stance on trade. The foundation emphasized that it had not authorized the use or alteration of Reagan’s 1987 speech and is currently assessing its legal recourse.
