John Bolton, the former US National Security Advisor, has criticized President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. He stated that the tariffs have reversed decades of Western efforts to realign India, moving it away from its historical ties with the Soviet Union and, subsequently, Russia, while also addressing the increasing threat from China. Bolton voiced these criticisms through posts on X, accusing Trump of damaging strategic achievements with his economic measures. Furthermore, he implied that this approach has allowed Chinese President Xi Jinping to capitalize on the situation and reshape the geopolitical balance in Asia. “The West has spent decades trying to wean India away from its Cold War attachment to the Soviet Union/ Russia, and cautioning India on the threat posed by China. Donald Trump has shredded decades of efforts with his disastrous tariff policy,” Bolton wrote. He added that Trump’s unwillingness to consider diplomatic strategies has provided Xi Jinping with an opportunity to make moves in the East. Bolton served as national security advisor from 2018-2019. The comments came after the SCO summit where Modi met with Putin and Xi. The leaders recognized the role of the Indian and Chinese economies in stabilizing global trade. Modi also emphasized the strong India-Russia relationship.
