The Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, marked by violence and displacement, has reached its eighth year. In 2017-18, the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military, perpetrated acts of violence against Rohingya Muslims, leading to their displacement. Millions of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh and India to escape the persecution.
The United Nations has recognized the Rohingya as the most persecuted group globally. Bangladesh currently hosts around 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in various camps. Rohingya refugees recently marked the eighth anniversary of their displacement, calling for their safe return to Rakhine State, their homeland. The discussions at the conference are focused on the rights of Rohingya people and ensuring justice for them.
Since November 2023, approximately 1.5 million Rohingya have entered Bangladesh. This influx has brought the total number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to at least 1.324 million. There are also reports of around 25,000 to 30,000 Rohingya attempting to cross the border. Adding to the strain, the camps see about 30,000 births annually.
