Confirmation has emerged from aviation and defense circles that the JF-17 Block III fighter jets, previously observed in Azerbaijan for what was termed an ‘exercise,’ have now been officially incorporated into the Azerbaijani Air Force. This transfer, disguised as a routine training mission, marks a significant clandestine delivery of advanced combat aircraft from Pakistan to its ally, Baku.
The jets made their public debut at Azerbaijan’s Victory Day parade on November 8, 2025, notably stripped of all Pakistani markings. Their prominent flypast, operated by Azerbaijani pilots, signaled their full integration into the nation’s defense arsenal.
Pakistan has supplied the initial installment of three JF-17 Block III multirole fighter jets, including at least one two-seater combat trainer. These aircraft are intended to replace the aging MiG-29 interceptors and MiG-29UB trainers previously operated by Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani presidency has officially confirmed the arrival of five Pakistani JF-17 Thunder Block III fighters. During the Victory Day parade, four single-seat and one twin-seat variant were presented, signifying their new role within the air defense force.
This move represents a growing strategic alliance, with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif publicly endorsing the delivery as a symbol of burgeoning cooperation. The parade featured a striking aerial formation over Baku.
Crucially, the aircraft were observed flying without visible national insignia, indicating a preparatory phase before full operational deployment. This public reveal solidifies Azerbaijan’s position as the fourth global operator of the JF-17 program, joining Pakistan, Myanmar, and Nigeria.
Previously, footage showed these same jets arriving in Azerbaijan in October for joint military exercises, then clearly marked with Pakistani national symbols and serial numbers. Prior to the parade, these markings were removed, though serial numbers persisted, confirming the transfer. One specific aircraft, bearing serial number 24-322, was documented in both its original Pakistani livery and later in Azerbaijani colors, validating the exchange.
The acquisition aligns with substantial bilateral defense agreements. Azerbaijan committed to purchasing JF-17 Block III fighters through a $1.6 billion contract signed in February 2024, which includes aircraft, pilot instruction, and weaponry. An example was displayed to Azerbaijani leadership at the ADEX exhibition in September 2024.
Pakistan further expanded its export offering in June 2025 with a massive $4.6 billion deal for 40 JF-17 Block III jets, Pakistan’s largest defense export to date. This comprehensive package includes phased deliveries, training, and logistical support.
The successful integration demonstrated at the November parade highlights the rapid implementation of this defense pact, with further deliveries anticipated to align with training schedules and operational readiness.
The JF-17 Thunder, a collaborative project between China and Pakistan, is a fourth-generation, single-engine fighter. It is designed for multirole missions and equipped with advanced avionics, including an AESA radar and a helmet-mounted display. Its performance specifications include a speed of Mach 1.8 and the capacity to carry various precision-guided munitions.
For Azerbaijan, the JF-17 Block III represents a significant leap in air combat capabilities. The aircraft’s modern systems enhance situational awareness and extend combat range, while the dual-seat trainer variant ensures efficient pilot transition and operational readiness, strengthening regional security.
