Australia is set to join the ranks of countries recognizing Palestine as a state, following similar moves by the UK and Canada. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed this decision, which will be formalized at the UN General Assembly in September. This move reflects a growing global pressure on Israel.
Albanese emphasized that lasting peace requires a permanent resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which Australia believes necessitates the recognition of a Palestinian state. He underscored Australia’s commitment to the two-state solution as the path to ending violence in Gaza, even with the recognition.
The decision comes after significant internal and external calls for recognition, spurred by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Australian government’s recognition will be subject to certain conditions, as the Prime Minister clarified.
