Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a strategic partnership with AST SpaceMobile to deliver direct-to-cell satellite-based mobile broadband technology throughout India. This marks Vi’s entry into the space-based communication market, joining Airtel and Jio, who have previously established partnerships in this domain. The collaboration seeks to enhance mobile broadband availability in areas where existing cellular networks are limited or absent.
As part of the agreement, Vi will handle terrestrial network integration, spectrum access, and market access, while AST SpaceMobile will be responsible for developing and operating the satellite system. The partnership is expected to create opportunities in emergency response, disaster management, and agriculture, in alignment with the Indian government’s Digital India vision.
