Tesla’s Robotaxi service has commenced a trial phase in Austin, Texas, initially targeting social media influencers. These individuals are experiencing the driverless ride service ahead of a broader public release. The cost per ride is set at ₹365, equivalent to $4.20, according to Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO. He views this launch as the culmination of a decade’s worth of work. Videos demonstrate Tesla vehicles operating autonomously within designated zones in Austin, with operating hours from 6 AM to midnight, subject to weather conditions. The entire Robotaxi software and AI chip were developed by Tesla. Currently, around 10 vehicles, mostly Model Y SUVs, are involved in the trial, and safety riders are present. Sawyer Merritt, an influencer, shared his positive experience, emphasizing the smooth and comfortable journey. The Tesla Robotaxi app is used for booking. A new Texas law, effective September 1, could impact Tesla’s expansion by requiring state permits for self-driving vehicle operations and granting officials the power to revoke permits if deemed necessary. In Austin, Tesla competes with Waymo, in collaboration with Uber, and Amazon’s Zoox. The Robotaxi service is currently available to a limited audience.
