The United States is witnessing a remarkable surge in demand for smartphones manufactured in India, marking a significant shift in the global tech landscape. The escalating trade disputes between China and the US have fueled this trend, leading to a substantial increase in the export of ‘Made in India’ smartphones. Between 2024 and 2025, the percentage of smartphones imported from China into the US plummeted from 61% to a mere 25%.
The growth of Indian-made smartphone deliveries to the US market has been phenomenal, with a 240% year-over-year increase. As a result, phones manufactured in India now constitute 44% of all smartphones imported into the US, up from just 13% the previous year.
Apple’s move to relocate its manufacturing operations from China to India is a primary factor behind this transformation. Apple manufactured the highest number of smartphones in India for the US market in the second quarter of 2025, according to Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia. This marks a milestone as India becomes the largest manufacturing hub for Apple destined for the US. Apple has begun manufacturing the iPhone 16 series Pro models in India. While some premium models are still produced in China, India’s importance is on the rise.
Samsung and Motorola are also increasing their supplies from India, though on a smaller scale compared to Apple. Motorola continues to have significant production in China, while Samsung relies on Vietnam. Apple is planning to double its production in India in the coming years. Reports indicate the company aims to export 80 million iPhones from India to the US by 2026, which requires rapid expansion of manufacturing facilities. India is not only becoming a global IT hub, but also a leading player in smartphone manufacturing, with the potential for further growth due to the involvement of major companies like Apple.
