AI is simplifying operations, and its application is expanding across various sectors. The gaming industry is actively adopting AI, with a Google Cloud survey highlighting that 87% of game developers are using AI agents to automate and streamline processes. This trend is particularly relevant as the gaming industry prioritizes cost reduction following recent workforce adjustments.
Developers are increasingly focusing on leveraging AI to automate tedious and repetitive tasks. This allows them to concentrate on more creative endeavors. Game publishers are embracing AI to manage industry-wide issues like escalating costs and extended creation timelines, all in response to the demands of gamers and the competitive landscape. The study by Google and The Harris Poll included feedback from 615 game developers across South Korea, the United States, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, gathered between late June and early July.
Results show that nearly 44% of developers employ AI agents to enhance content and accelerate the processing of text, code, voice, audio, and video. However, the use of AI in video games is a contentious topic, causing concerns about job security, intellectual property disputes, and potential wage cuts within the gaming community.
Last year, video game performers in Hollywood protested against AI’s impact and wage-related issues, leading to studio closures and the elimination of over 10,000 jobs. The gaming industry is expected to experience growth in the coming years, supported by the introduction of premium titles and new consoles, which are expected to drive up spending. The survey also revealed that 94% of developers are optimistic that AI will help reduce overall development costs over time.
