In a move to enhance online safety, Australia is implementing a ban on YouTube accounts for individuals under 16 years old, starting in December. This action builds upon existing bans on other popular social media platforms. The eSafety Commissioner’s recommendations led to the inclusion of YouTube in this list, citing its exposure of children to risky content, much like traditional social media. The Prime Minister of Australia has affirmed the government’s dedication to protecting young people’s well-being in the digital environment. Research indicates that YouTube is widely used by Australian children aged 10-15, surpassing the popularity of even TikTok and Instagram. Furthermore, a concerning percentage of children have reported encountering harmful material on YouTube. While under-16s can continue to watch videos, they won’t be able to participate in activities such as commenting, creating content, or receiving personalized recommendations on the platform.
