Despite not being selected for India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad, Shreyas Iyer’s career seems to be on an upward trajectory. According to sources, the stylish right-handed batsman is in contention to take over as the ODI captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
Iyer has an impressive ODI record, built over the last four years. Between 2021 and 2025, he has maintained an average of over 45, recorded 14 half-centuries, and performed well in key matches, including crucial knocks in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.
Furthermore, he has solved India’s long-standing problem at the No. 4 position, a spot that previously caused issues for the team. His ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when required makes him a reliable batter in the format.
Iyer has captaincy experience, having led Delhi Capitals to their inaugural IPL final in 2020, and winning the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. He also led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Former players often commend his calm nature, his ability to mentor young players, and his tactical decision-making skills.
Rohit Sharma has not yet commented on his ODI retirement. However, with the 2027 World Cup cycle approaching, the selectors seem to be preparing for a smooth transition. If all goes to plan, Iyer could lead India in the next phase of ODI cricket.
