With speculation swirling about his future following the retirements of other senior players, Mohammed Shami has firmly addressed rumors of his retirement. Shami made it clear that he does not plan to retire anytime soon. He used the opportunity to directly address those who have been discussing his retirement, giving a forthright response.
During an interview, Shami said that he will continue to play until his enthusiasm diminishes. He stated, “If anyone has a problem, tell me, will my retirement improve their lives? Tell me, whose life have I become a problem for, that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I will retire myself.” The fast bowler went on to say, “Don’t select me, but I will keep working hard. Even if I’m not selected for international cricket, I will play domestic cricket. I will continue playing somewhere.” The 34-year-old cricketer added that he doesn’t think it’s the right time for retirement.
Shami also shared that he still has a dream to win the ODI World Cup. He stated that the team came close in 2023, but they were unable to win. He hopes to be there in 2027. Shami also mentioned his efforts to improve his fitness, specifically in reducing weight and improving his bowling stamina. He said he still has a great love for cricket, and he will quit the game when he loses his passion. Shami last played international cricket in March and did not feature in the recent Asia Cup. In the IPL 2025, he seemed to struggle with his bowling rhythm.
