India’s explosive opener Shafali Verma attributed her sensational 87-run knock in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final to the encouraging presence of cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. Verma, who joined the squad as a replacement just last week, played a pivotal role in India’s historic triumph over South Africa, guiding them to their first-ever Women’s Cricket World Cup title.
The 21-year-old’s performance was a powerful statement of redemption, especially after being dropped from the ODI squad last year and scoring a modest 10 in the semi-final against Australia. Her dominant display against the Proteas showcased her resilience and skill.
Speaking after the victory, Verma expressed gratitude for Tendulkar’s motivational influence. “When I saw him (Tendulkar), it gave me an incredible boost. I kept talking to him and he kept giving me confidence,” she revealed. “He is the master of cricket, and we keep getting inspired just looking at him.”
Adding to her impact, Verma also proved her all-round capabilities by taking two vital wickets during South Africa’s chase. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur entrusted her with the ball, a move that proved decisive. Kaur explained her decision as a calculated risk based on Verma’s self-assurance, which ultimately led to crucial breakthroughs.
Despite a period away from the national team, Verma never doubted her capacity to perform on the grand stage. “I just wanted to make my team win. My mind was clear, and I worked on my plans,” she said, emphasizing the support from senior players who urged her to play her natural game.
