Shubman Gill has been officially ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, set to commence on November 22 in Guwahati. This means Rishabh Pant will take over the captaincy for the crucial encounter of the Freedom Trophy 2025. Gill’s absence stems from a neck injury he suffered during India’s first innings in Kolkata. He was forced to leave the field after facing only three deliveries and underwent immediate medical assessment at a local hospital. His inability to return to bat meant he missed the rest of the Kolkata Test.
Concerns are also rising regarding Gill’s participation in the upcoming ODI series. Sources suggest that the team leadership is prioritizing his long-term fitness, opting for a cautious approach to prevent any further complications. This potential rest from the ODIs is purely a preventative measure, ensuring he is fully recovered for subsequent international commitments. With Gill’s unavailability, Rishabh Pant will continue to captain the side as India seeks to level the series after their 30-run defeat in the first Test. India was restricted to 93 in their chase of 124 in the opening match.
Gill’s injury, a suspected whiplash, occurred while attempting a powerful shot. He was seen experiencing discomfort in his neck and was later taken to the hospital. While discharged the following day, he was later observed at the Kolkata airport wearing a neck brace, highlighting the severity. The BCCI stated that Gill would travel with the team to Guwahati and his participation would be subject to a final medical assessment. The arrival of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the squad adds another option, particularly if Gill’s injury necessitates a reshuffle in the playing eleven.
