The reins of Pakistan’s ODI team have been handed over to star pacer Shaheen Afridi, succeeding Mohammad Rizwan as captain. The change comes after a critical assessment by the selection committee, including head coach Mike Hesson. Mohammad Rizwan’s tenure was impacted by a recent downturn in results, with the team securing only one win in their last nine ODI encounters. This period also included a disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy. Although Rizwan initially led Pakistan to impressive overseas series victories in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, the team’s form faltered subsequently. A slump during the Champions Trophy and subsequent series against New Zealand and the West Indies ultimately prompted the leadership change. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced Afridi’s elevation shortly after deliberations concluded. This appointment follows speculation that began when Rizwan’s captaincy status became uncertain. While Afridi’s prior captaincy experience in a T20I series against New Zealand did not yield a positive result, similar to Rizwan’s recent situation, there is optimism for a stronger performance this time. Shaheen Afridi’s consistent success as a leading ODI wicket-taker for Pakistan last year is a significant asset. The coaching staff and selectors are confident that this new leadership role will not hinder his on-field contributions. The upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa will mark Afridi’s debut as the national ODI captain.
