Magnus Carlsen has triumphed at the Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger, claiming his seventh title. The final day of the competition brought intense moments, especially for Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh, who was in the running for the championship until the last moment. His hopes were ultimately dashed by a loss against Fabiano Caruana.
The final round saw Gukesh battling from a disadvantageous position. Despite a determined effort to equalize the score, a late-game blunder, triggered by time pressure, cost him the match. With only a couple of seconds remaining on his clock, Gukesh conceded defeat, expressing his disappointment openly.
Carlsen’s performance saw him draw against Arjun Erigaisi, securing enough points to win the tournament with 16 points. The victory was secured by Carlsen’s consistent play, and Gukesh’s loss in the final round.
Caruana’s win over Gukesh not only ended Gukesh’s title hopes but also promoted Caruana to second place with 15.5 points. Gukesh finished third with 14.5, while Arjun Erigaisi placed fifth.
