In a commanding display, NorthEast United FC defeated Diamond Harbour FC 6-1 in the Durand Cup final held at Salt Lake Stadium, successfully retaining their championship. The Highlanders led 2-0 at halftime and continued their strong performance in the second half, securing the largest winning margin in a Durand Cup final since India gained independence. Asheer Akhtar initiated the scoring, followed by Parthib Gogoi who extended the lead before halftime. In the second half, Thoi Singh, substitute Jairo Samperio, Andres Rodriguez, and Alaaeddine Ajaraie (penalty) added to the tally, ensuring a historic win. Diamond Harbour’s consolation goal was scored by Luka Majcen. Diamond Harbour FC, which had a remarkable run, defeating Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal to reach the final, was unable to replicate that success in the final match. NorthEast United controlled the game from the beginning with a solid defense, a strong midfield, and efficient goal-scoring. The victory marks NorthEast United as the second team, after East Bengal, to win the Durand Cup consecutively since India’s independence.
