In a significant development for New Zealand cricket, Kane Williamson has decided to retire from T20 Internationals. The veteran batsman, who has been a cornerstone of the Black Caps for over a decade, made the announcement regarding his departure from the T20I format. Williamson, who first played T20Is in 2011, has amassed 93 caps and led the team in 75 of those matches. His most recent involvement in T20Is was in the last year’s T20 World Cup. Williamson explained that this decision was made to provide the team with greater clarity as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is just three months away. He emphasized that it’s the ‘right time’ for him and for the team’s progression in the T20 format. While he is stepping away from international T20s, Williamson affirmed his commitment to continuing his career in ODIs and Tests for now. He acknowledged the wealth of T20 talent within New Zealand and expressed a desire to see them develop and gain experience. During his tenure, Williamson led New Zealand to considerable success in T20 World Cups, including a final appearance in 2021. He leaves the T20I stage as the second-highest run-scorer for his country in the format. He will still be active in T20 franchise cricket and is slated to play Test cricket against the West Indies soon.
