Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel believes that experienced stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain strong contenders for India’s 2027 ODI World Cup campaign. Morkel’s endorsement hinges on their unparalleled experience, a crucial element for success in major international tournaments. The future of these prominent cricketers has been a frequent topic of discussion since their recent departures from Test cricket.
Having already exited the T20 international arena post the last World Cup, questions have naturally arisen about their availability for the 2027 edition of the ODI showpiece. Morkel, however, underscored the significant advantages of retaining such seasoned campaigners. “They are quality players,” Morkel commented during a press briefing. “Their value lies in their experience; you can’t buy that. They’ve lifted trophies and understand the dynamics of big tournaments.”
He continued, “Certainly, if they remain physically fit and feel capable, the World Cup is still some time away.” Reflecting on the recent Test series loss, Morkel stressed the importance of channeling energy into the upcoming white-ball assignments. “The Test series was tough, but we’ve had time to process it. Our focus now shifts to white-ball cricket, where we’ve been performing well. The potential return of Virat and Rohit would inject fresh vitality into the team, and we’re eagerly anticipating the upcoming white-ball matches.”
Furthermore, Morkel offered positive updates on the recovery progress of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom are currently sidelined due to injuries. Gill is reportedly recovering from a neck issue, while Iyer has commenced his rehabilitation.
