Karun Nair, the middle-order batsman for Team India, had a challenging tour of England. While several other batsmen like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul performed well, Nair struggled to make a significant impact, managing only one half-century in the Test series. After the England series, Nair took to social media to reflect on Test cricket, leading to speculation about his future and even congratulatory messages about retirement, though he hasn’t confirmed any plans to retire.
Nair’s Instagram post, made after the end of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, highlighted his feelings. He wrote, “Where every run is a labor and every wicket is a reward. It challenges your mind, body, and soul – day in and day out. In the last few months, we gave it our all and this team showed what purposeful struggle means? No shortcuts, just the right effort and pride in the badge and a great finish. What a journey!” The post sparked comments, including one from a fan wishing him a “Happy Retirement.” This has fueled discussions about his Test cricket future. In the England series, Nair scored 205 runs in 8 innings, averaging around 25. He is now potentially out of the Duleep Trophy. During the last Test, he suffered a finger injury, which may prevent him from playing. He was expected to play for the Central Zone team. The Duleep Trophy starts on August 28, 2025.
Due to his performance in England, a comeback to Test cricket seems unlikely. Shreyas Iyer might replace him. Reports suggest Iyer is ready for a return to Test cricket.
