The World Games in Chengdu were marred by the death of Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis. The long-distance runner, 29, collapsed during a competition on August 8th. He was immediately taken to a hospital, but he did not survive. The organizers of the World Games and the International Orienteering Federation announced that Debertolis collapsed due to the intense heat and humidity. The incident occurred during the men’s middle-distance competition final, approximately 50 kilometers from the central area of Chengdu. Swiss athlete Riccardo Rancan won the event with a time of 45 minutes and 22 seconds.
