The Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise is reportedly mulling over the release of their expensive acquisition, Heinrich Klaasen, following a mixed IPL 2025 season. Klaasen, who commanded a staggering INR 23 crore last season, was the team’s highest earner. Despite finishing as SRH’s top run-scorer with 487 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 172.67, the team’s overall performance, concluding in sixth place, has led management to consider significant squad rejuvenation. This contemplation coincides with discussions about a potential trade for Mohammed Shami, with other franchises showing interest.
The decision regarding Klaasen is particularly complex. While his match-winning potential is well-established, recent form has become a point of concern. Since stepping away from international cricket, Klaasen has had limited opportunities in competitive matches. His performance in The Hundred 2025, where he scored 151 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 112.68, has cast doubt on his current sharpness and reliability. The high cost of retaining him is being weighed against these performance metrics.
Parallel to this, SRH is reportedly eyeing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green as a prime target. Green’s acquisition would bolster the squad with his batting, bowling, and youth potential. The existing ties between SRH’s leadership, including Pat Cummins and Daniel Vettori, and Australian cricket circles could facilitate a move for Green. Releasing Klaasen would free up significant salary cap space, potentially allowing SRH to launch an aggressive bidding campaign for Green, a player who could seamlessly fit into the number four role, mirroring Klaasen’s position.
Even if Klaasen enters the auction pool, his reputation as one of the most destructive T20 batsmen globally means he would attract considerable interest. His explosive hitting capabilities remain a major asset. For SRH, the challenge lies in deciding whether to stick with their proven, albeit expensive, match-winner or to pivot towards building a more balanced and adaptable squad for the long term.
