The SA20 league is actively seeking greater involvement from Indian cricketers, according to commissioner Graeme Smith. Smith confirmed the upcoming 2025-26 season will run from December 26 through January 25, a change that will see the T20 tournament occupy the space traditionally held by South Africa’s Boxing Day Test. Addressing the media in Mumbai, the former Proteas captain emphasized the significant appeal and skill set of Indian cricketers. He stated that ongoing discussions with the BCCI are exploring ways to integrate more Indian talent, within the current governance framework. To date, Dinesh Karthik is the sole Indian to have played in the SA20. Active Indian players are presently prohibited from participating in international leagues under BCCI rules. Smith pointed out that the presence of IPL franchise owners in the SA20 provides a unique advantage for potentially signing Indian players in the future. He also stressed the importance of recruiting players who can contribute to winning performances, a key driver for the franchises.
