Shubman Gill, stepping into the role of India’s new ODI captain, has shed light on his working relationship with Rohit Sharma, emphasizing continuity and mutual respect. Contrary to external speculation, Gill assured that his dynamic with Sharma has not altered, providing him with crucial support as he leads the team.
‘I think the narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before,’ Gill communicated to the press. He elaborated on how he leverages the vast experience of Sharma and Kohli, stating, ‘I go to them and ask what they think, how they would do it if they were in my place.’ This collaborative approach is central to Gill’s strategy as he makes his captaincy decisions.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will be donning the Indian colors together for the first time since the Champions Trophy final. Their presence adds significant strength and experience to the squad.
Looking ahead, Gill spoke about the honor of succeeding legendary captains like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. ‘Carrying the legacy forward… I had numerous conversations with Rohit and Virat about how to take the team forward, and those leanings and experiences will help our team,’ he shared.
The first of three ODIs against Australia is set to take place on Sunday in Perth. This marks Gill’s official debut as ODI captain, a position he assumes following Sharma’s tenure. The series also includes five T20 internationals.
Gill’s recent captaincy experience in the five-match Test series in England, where he amassed an impressive 754 runs, has prepared him for these new leadership challenges. The series concluded in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
