Shubman Gill, the current Test captain for India, has finally shed light on the controversial decision to leave out experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami from the Test team. Gill acknowledged Shami’s unparalleled quality but also pointed towards the emerging talent within the squad, including Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, as factors influencing selection. During a press briefing before the next Test, Gill confessed that omitting a bowler of Shami’s stature was a difficult choice. He credited the strong performances of other pacers who have stepped up, such as Akash Deep, in addition to the established brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, for making the decision a tough one.
“When you look at the performances of other guys like Akash Deep and Prasidh and also what Siraj and Bumrah have done for us, it becomes a tough call,” Gill explained. He further commented, “It’s never easy when someone like Shami bhai has to miss out, but at the same time, we have to plan ahead.” Regarding specifics on fitness and selection, Gill suggested that the selectors would be the most appropriate source for detailed information. Shami has been sidelined from Test cricket since the 2023 WTC final, grappling with fitness challenges. His most recent international outing was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he was also excluded from the ODI and T20I series against Australia. A senior BCCI official indicated that Shami was asked to play for India A but declined, citing ongoing efforts to manage his workload. The board is reportedly aware of medical reports suggesting potential issues with Shami’s stamina for extended bowling spells. Despite his absence from the national Test side, Shami has been a force in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, securing 15 wickets from three games, underscoring his enduring skill.
