Shubman Gill, the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team, displayed excellent batting in the first match of the Asia Cup 2025 against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), scoring 20 runs not out in 9 balls. India won the match by 9 wickets. Beyond his cricketing prowess, Gill is also known for his character. He consistently fulfills his commitments. He made a promise to his childhood friend and has now brought the son of a juice seller with him to Dubai. This individual, Avinash Kumar, has been Shubman Gill’s friend since childhood.
How Did Gill and Avinash’s Paths Cross?
Shubman Gill used to go with his father, Lakhwinder Gill, to the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali for practice. Ramvilas Shah, originally from Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, ran a juice stall at Gate No. 1 of the stadium. Gill and his father were regular customers, enjoying fresh juice there. Ramvilas’s son, Avinash Kumar, was a fast bowler who practiced at the grounds behind the Mohali stadium.
In 2014, Lakhwinder Gill noticed Avinash selling juice. In an interview, Avinash recounted that Shubman Gill’s father inquired why he was selling juice. Avinash replied, “I’ve quit cricket and am working at a photo studio. I’m here today because my father isn’t well.” Lakhwinder Gill disapproved, emphasizing that cricket could transform his family’s life. A week later, he shared a video of a side-arm thrower and advised Avinash to resume practice.
Avinash’s Life: A Transformation
Avinash revealed that he began practicing side-arm throwing at Shubman Gill’s father’s suggestion. During this period, his friendship with Shubman Gill grew stronger. “I knew him from the academy, but now I’m his personal side-arm thrower. That was the day, and this is the day – we are together,” Avinash shared with pride.
Avinash mentioned he earned roughly 150 to 200 rupees daily, but never took money from Shubman or his father, as they were his mentors. They gifted him presents during festivals like Holi and Diwali and supported his family during difficult times. He is forever grateful to them.
Avinash’s Role: Side-Arm Thrower for Punjab in 2019
In 2019, Avinash became a side-arm thrower for the Punjab Ranji team, earning immediate appreciation from senior players like Mandeep Singh and Gurkeerat Mann. He also built relationships with young players such as Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, and Anmolpreet Singh. In 2024, Shubman Gill became captain of the Gujarat Super Titans.
Avinash stated, “Yaar, now you’re captain, take me to IPL.” Shubman’s reassuring words gave him hope. He assured him not to worry.
Gill’s Commitment: A Promise Kept
Avinash mentioned in an interview that earlier this year, he was playing with his son in Chandigarh when Shubman called. Shubman told him to pack his bags as he would soon receive a call from the Gujarat Titans management. He received gifts of spikes, clothes, and a mobile, but the gesture was more profound—it was invaluable.
IPL Preparation: Focusing on the Test Series
Before IPL 2025, Shubman was focusing on the five-match Test series against England. He needed someone, along with his childhood friend and mentor Khushpreet Singh Aulakh, to challenge him with the red ball.
Gill’s True Companion
Avinash explained that KP Paji had suggested Shubman start practicing with the red ball during the IPL. When Avinash joined the Gujarat Titans, Shubman asked him to bowl in the nets with the red ball, which he did. This helped Shubman Gill significantly in England.
A True Friendship: Beyond the Juice Stall
Meeting Shubman at his father’s stall was a blessing for Avinash. He now regards Gill as family. The stall was the place where Shubman not only found fresh juice but also a true friend and confidant.
