A bill has been introduced in the parliament to regulate online money gaming, intending to ban such games. ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025’ was passed by both houses of parliament within two days and is expected to become law soon after the President’s approval. This will primarily affect online fantasy games in India, with Dream11 being the biggest player. The company runs fantasy games for various sports, including cricket, football, and kabaddi, where users participate with money and receive winnings. This bill, once enacted, will ban these games.
Dream11 and other companies entered the Indian fantasy gaming market due to its growth. Dream11 secured a title sponsorship from the BCCI for 358 crore rupees, which included the company’s name prominently displayed on the Indian team’s jersey and training kits. This deal was established in 2023 and is scheduled to run until 2026. The new bill may force Dream11 to shut down its fantasy gaming business, which is its primary source of income.
