The cricketing world is abuzz with the emergence of Dewald Brevis, a young South African batter who has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. His most recent achievement, a T20I century, marked a significant milestone as he became the youngest South African to accomplish this feat. This remarkable performance occurred in Darwin, where he scored 125 runs off just 56 balls against Australia in the second T20I. Born on April 29, 2003, Brevis’s journey began at a young age, with his talent first becoming apparent in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, where he led in run-scoring. This success led to an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians. His batting style has drawn comparisons to AB de Villiers, earning him the nickname “Baby AB.” Brevis’s impact extended beyond the international stage. In October 2022, he showcased his dominance in domestic cricket, scoring a remarkable 162 runs off 57 balls for the Titans, the highest T20 score in South Africa. He has also been a key player in global T20 leagues like the Caribbean Premier League, T20 Blast, and Major League Cricket. Although his T20I debut against Australia saw a modest start with five runs in his first two innings, his potential was evident. He secured the third-highest run-scorer position in the 2023-24 One-Day Cup and was instrumental in MI Cape Town’s SA20 title win, scoring 573 runs at an average of 47.75, including two centuries. In the recent T20I against Australia, Brevis’s unbeaten 125 in Darwin showcased his explosive batting prowess. This innings made him the youngest South African to score a T20I century, breaking Richard Levi’s previous record. The century was also the second-fastest by a South African batter, completed in just 41 balls. Additionally, he was signed by the Mumbai Indians as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in the 2025 IPL season.
