New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has revealed her plans to retire from One Day Internationals after the 2025 World Cup. While this marks the conclusion of her ODI career, her expertise will continue in the T20 arena.
Devine shared, “It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away.” She also acknowledged, “I feel very fortunate to have NZC’s support in finding a solution that means I can still give to the White Ferns.”
“It’s important that everyone knows I’m focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away,” Devine stated. She is eager to support the team’s development in the coming months.
Devine, a 35-year-old all-rounder, will retire from ODIs following the upcoming 50-over World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka later this year. She will continue to be available for T20 internationals, under a flexible contract with New Zealand Cricket. This decision coincides with the announcement of the New Zealand women’s central contract list, which will not include Devine due to her transition from the longer format. She will lead the team through the World Cup before handing over the captaincy for subsequent ODI matches, beginning with New Zealand’s home season.
