Jasprit Bumrah has disclosed that he was offered the role of India’s Test captain, but he turned it down. The pace spearhead, known for his exceptional bowling, cited concerns about workload management as the primary reason. Following the retirements of senior players, Bumrah emerged as a potential captaincy candidate. He admitted he had discussed his future workload with the BCCI and medical experts, before making the decision to decline the offer. Bumrah stated that leading in all matches of a Test series would be difficult for him due to potential injury risks.
Bumrah, who has a history of back issues, explained that he wanted to ensure consistency within the team. He believed that having different captains during a series wouldn’t be fair to the team. He expressed that while the captaincy was something he had worked hard for and a role he wanted, he ultimately prioritized his fitness and the ability to play consistently across all formats. He felt he could contribute more to the team by focusing on his performance as a player.
