Speculation is rife about the future of Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI format, with the BCCI slated to review their positions following the South Africa series. A meeting is anticipated in Ahmedabad to discuss strategies for the road to the 2027 ODI World Cup, focusing on the roles of these experienced campaigners.
Rohit and Virat, who are currently only active in One Day Internationals, are seeking clarity on their future commitments and potential inclusion in the squad for the next World Cup. The limited number of ODIs in the international calendar presents a challenge for players aiming to secure their spots for the tournament more than a year and a half away.
A BCCI official emphasized the need for transparency, saying, “Players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature deserve clear communication regarding their roles and the management’s vision for them. Continuous uncertainty isn’t beneficial.”
While acknowledging their contributions in the dead rubber against Australia, where Rohit amassed 202 runs and Virat finished with an unbeaten 74, the official pointed out their struggles in earlier games. “They did score runs in the third ODI against Australia, but the series was already lost and the bowlers laid the foundation. They looked out of sorts in the first two games, and such lapses are costly,” the source added.
In an effort to boost their match readiness, the BCCI may also suggest that both players participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, set to begin on December 24. This domestic tournament could provide the necessary platform for them to find form and rhythm. Their participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, kicking off November 30, will be a crucial period for assessment.
