The Northern Superchargers will be searching for a new head coach as Andrew Flintoff has decided to leave the role after two seasons. The former England all-rounder cited a financial disagreement with the franchise’s new owners, the Sun Group, as the primary reason for his departure ahead of the 2026 season of The Hundred.
Flintoff, who took charge in November 2023, his first senior coaching role, revealed on the ‘Beard Before Wicket’ podcast that contract negotiations with the Sun Group stalled. He felt the offered compensation did not adequately reflect his contributions and that he was not being valued appropriately by the new ownership, which also manages IPL and SA20 teams.
“I think I’m worth more than just over a quarter of the [salary of] other head coaches,” Flintoff stated, emphasizing his desire to feel valued beyond just monetary terms. He expressed sadness at leaving, as he believed the team was on a positive trajectory.
Under Flintoff’s guidance, the Superchargers saw a steady rise in performance. They finished fourth in the 2024 standings and improved to third this year. Their chance at reaching the finals was unfortunately ended by a rain-abandoned Eliminator match, where they lost out to the Trent Rockets due to league position.
Flintoff is also currently coaching the England Lions for their winter tour in Australia. Despite the Superchargers’ assertion that they proposed a higher salary to retain him, Flintoff’s decision is final. He has confirmed receiving other coaching offers for The Hundred 2026 but is not rushing to make a decision, preferring to remain open to new possibilities.
