With Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a two-day visit to Karnataka, a few citizen groups and civic activists have launched a campaign on social media asking the government to speed up the suburban rail project.
The 37-year-old project is stuck as the special purpose vehicle, which is likely to be christened Bengaluru Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (B-RIDE), is yet to be set up though the extended railway board (ERB) gave its nod in November. As part of the #ChukuBukuCabinetClearanceBeku campaign, citizen groups have sought the PM’s intervention, saying the project has not gained momentum despite BJP-led governments at the Centre and state.
Sources say the draft cabinet note for the project is now before the finance ministry. “It was supposed to be approved by the Centre by now but has been delayed due to some reasons. We hope the approval will be granted by this month-end,” said an official. Sources say Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), which is supposed to execute the project, recently launched its website (www.kride.in) and a new office will be set up at Samparka Soudha in Rajajinagar.
