The Jharkhand government is facing accusations of manufacturing new criminal incidents to obscure underlying offenses. Babu Lal Marandi, the state BJP chief and leader of the opposition, asserted that the administration and its systems have developed a habit of fabricating ‘new crimes’ to hide the reality of ongoing illegal activities. Significant evidence has emerged from recent ED investigations into the ‘black empire’ of coal in Dhanbad. A particularly disturbing development is the alleged instruction from senior police officials, benefiting financially from the coal trade, to ‘permanently eliminate’ specific ground-level operatives of coal mafias. The motive behind this alleged directive is to prevent these individuals from revealing incriminating information to the ED. Reports indicate that those currently being questioned by the ED are also being targeted for elimination to ensure the cover-up remains intact. This tactic of ‘encountering evidence’ in the name of apprehending criminals is a disturbing echo of past events in the state. Jharkhand has a history with a DGP accused of taking contracts for staged encounters and of perpetrating corruption at levels never seen before, with criticisms even coming from within the ruling party. Investigators like the ED are advised to be extremely vigilant, as the prevailing environment prioritizes silencing the truth over revealing it. When the pillars of power, the administrative machinery, and organized crime converge, the perversion of justice becomes an almost inevitable outcome.
