The body of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has arrived in Delhi from Singapore. The remains were then transported to Guwahati. Following a post-mortem on Saturday, the body was handed over to the Indian ambassador. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the Delhi airport to pay his respects.
CM Sarma confirmed that the body will be kept at the Arjun Bhogeshwar Barua Sports Complex in Guwahati for the public to pay their respects. The complex will be open to the public from 9 AM to 7 PM.
The Assam government announced state mourning for three days to honor the singer.
Massive crowds of fans gathered outside Garg’s residence and at the airport in Guwahati to pay their respects to the singer. Musician and singer Manas Robin expressed his grief, saying that Garg’s death is a significant loss for Indian music and the Assamese community. He emphasized the deep impact Garg’s music had on people’s lives.
Congress MLA Diganta Barman highlighted Garg’s generosity and contribution to the community, stating that he was the soul of Assam. He appealed to the government to award Garg the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.
Another Congress MLA, Nandita Das, expressed disbelief and stated that Garg would live on through his music. The Assam government announced that there will be no public celebrations during the period of mourning.
The Chief Minister said that a special plane is bringing Garg’s body back to Guwahati. The public is requested to allow the family some private time with the deceased artist. The Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning period, during which official entertainment and public events will be suspended.
