India is currently under a multi-faceted weather advisory from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Punjab is under a yellow alert for impending cold wave conditions, expected to impact isolated areas with frigid temperatures. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions against the extreme cold.
Meanwhile, the southern and eastern parts of the country face a deluge. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. This could lead to significant water accumulation and potential disruptions. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also anticipating thundersqualls and strong gusts of wind, requiring preparedness for severe weather events.
The IMD has also flagged potential hazards for coastal communities. Squally weather is predicted for the south Kerala coast and the surrounding Lakshadweep islands, along with the Comorin region and the southern Bay of Bengal. Similar warnings extend to the coast of Tamil Nadu and the Andaman Sea.
Further out at sea, squally winds are projected over the Gulf of Mannar, near the Sri Lanka coast, and across a large swathe of the southern and northern Andaman Sea. The southeastern Bay of Bengal and the south Andaman Sea are expected to experience the most intense squally conditions, with strong winds posing a serious threat to maritime operations.
Delhi residents are experiencing a significant chill. Despite generally clear skies, morning fog is a persistent feature. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 25°C, but the minimum temperature is forecast to be as low as 8°C to 10°C. The city recorded a low of 8°C on Wednesday, marking a clear return of winter conditions.
