Varanasi is witnessing the progress of its ropeway project with trial runs currently underway. The project is scheduled to become operational by the end of December. Although the initial deadline was missed, the authorities are working diligently to ensure the launch happens as planned. This marks a significant milestone, as Varanasi is set to introduce the first ropeway transportation system in India.
The trial phase, which began in July, is focused on assessing and refining the operational aspects of the system. The aim is to enhance the service by proactively identifying and resolving any operational challenges. The original target date of September 30 was not achievable, leading to a revised deadline of December. The ropeway will traverse from Cantt to Godowlia, encompassing five key stops: Varanasi Cantonment, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girja Ghar, and Godowlia.
Commuters can expect a considerable reduction in travel time, with the ropeway completing the journey in about 15 minutes, in contrast to the 45-50 minutes required via road transport. The project’s rapid completion is prioritized to facilitate the December launch. The foundation for the project was laid in March 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
