The Uttar Pradesh government’s focus on a dependable power supply is yielding positive results, as evidenced by a sharp decline in transformer damage. Data from the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) shows that the number of damaged transformers has significantly decreased thanks to proactive measures and stringent oversight. This improvement is particularly noticeable in the April-May period of 2025–26, reflecting improved power distribution and maintenance protocols.
Dr. Ashish Kumar Goyal, UPPCL Chairman, highlighted that power transformer damage fell to 12 units during April-May 2025–26, a significant decrease from 42 in 2024–25, 61 in 2023–24, and 90 in 2022–23. General transformer failures also decreased, from 7,322 in April-May 2022–23 to 2,613 in the same period of 2025–26. This represents a substantial reduction of over 64%.
The reduction in transformer failures is a result of several strategic interventions. Power transformers were equipped with bell protection systems, while distribution transformers received tailless and fuse units. Continuous monitoring systems were also put into action, along with rigorous reviews of maintenance procedures, all aimed at improving system reliability. A zero-tolerance policy is in effect, with officials facing disciplinary action for any negligence leading to power supply disruptions. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made a commitment to 24/7 quality power supply, and the current initiatives are a step in that direction, benefiting the public across the state.
