The Allahabad High Court has issued a stay on the investigation concerning 558 madrassas in Uttar Pradesh. The court provided temporary relief to the madrassas, halting the investigation initiated by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). These educational institutions, which are Islamic religious schools, receive government aid and funding. The court has sought a response from the government within a four-week timeframe.
The investigation into the 558 government madrassas was ordered by the Economic Offences Wing based on directives from the National Human Rights Commission. The High Court, however, provided temporary relief to the petitioners, putting a hold on the EOW’s investigation into the 558 grant-in-aid madrassas.
The petitioners have challenged orders from the National Human Rights Commission issued on February 28, 2025, April 23, 2025, and June 11, 2025. These orders mandated that the Economic Offences Wing conduct the investigation. The petition seeks to have this order from the commission revoked.
The court has ordered all respondents to submit their counter-affidavits within four weeks. The case has been scheduled to be listed before the relevant bench on November 17, 2025. Furthermore, the court stated in its order that the directives of the National Human Rights Commission and the government will remain on hold until further instructions. The order was made on the petition of Teachers Association of Madaris Arabia, Varanasi, and two others by the double bench of Justice Saral Srivastava and Justice Amitabh Kumar Rai.
