Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Minority Affairs, has confirmed that tribal populations in the Northeast and other regions of India will be exempt from the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). This measure aims to preserve their way of life, allowing them to freely adhere to their customs. During a program hosted by the RSS-affiliated Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Rijiju outlined the central government’s position, addressing the discourse circulating on social media. He said, ‘As a central minister, I want to share our government’s perspective. Our government and the BJP are evaluating the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the nation, as per the Constitution. Given that criminal laws are uniform, the question arises: why not civil laws as well?’ He also highlighted that some states have initiated preliminary work on this subject. ‘However, we’ve made it clear that tribals will be exempt. They should have the liberty to live by their traditions. This (Uniform Civil Code) will not be enforced in Schedule 6, Schedule 5, the Northeast, and other tribal territories,’ the minister stated.
