Trade negotiations between India and the United States will restart in New Delhi today. This follows the US’s decision to impose penalties on India for its procurement of Russian oil. The upcoming discussions are seen as a pivotal moment in defining the course of future trade relations. The US delegation is headed by Brendan Lynch, the Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, and will engage with Indian officials. Originally, the sixth round of discussions on a bilateral trade agreement was planned for August 25-29, but this was postponed because of the 50% tariff imposed by Washington, of which 25% was related to India’s oil imports from Russia. Despite the tense atmosphere, both sides have maintained contact through weekly virtual meetings. Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, along with other senior officials, will represent India. Representatives from the finance and corporate ministries will also be present.
