Air traffic at Delhi’s IGI airport experienced widespread delays on Friday morning, with over 100 flights affected by a critical technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. The problem, identified as an issue with the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) which feeds into the Auto Track System (AMS) for flight plan generation, has been ongoing since Thursday evening. Consequently, air traffic controllers are manually processing flight plans, a significantly slower method that has caused substantial delays. Delhi airport, a major hub handling over 1,500 flight movements daily, is feeling the full brunt of this technical failure. Airlines have taken to issuing advisories to passengers, warning of disruptions. Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have all communicated that the ATC system’s problems are impacting their operations, leading to extended airport wait times and potential onboard delays. Passengers are urged to maintain contact with their airlines for real-time updates on flight status and to plan their travel accordingly. The airport management is working diligently with all stakeholders to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.
