Political tensions in Tamil Nadu continue to simmer as the state government has taken the Governor to the Supreme Court. The latest dispute centers on the Kalaignar University Bill, with the government challenging the Governor’s decision to reserve it for the President’s consideration. This move comes after earlier instances of conflict between the Governor and the state.
The fundamental issue revolves around the approval of bills, specifically the University Vice-Chancellor Bill. This bill seeks to alter the appointment process of university vice-chancellors, shifting the power from the Governor to the Chief Minister. The Governor has not approved the bill.
Adding to the tension, Governor R. N. Ravi formed a committee for the appointment of vice-chancellors, which the Tamil Nadu government contested. The Supreme Court previously sided with the state government in this dispute. This recent petition marks another escalation of the issue.
Although the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state, the Governor has yet to act on the bill, despite the court’s directive to make a decision within a specified timeframe. This delay has prompted the Stalin government to express frustration, citing the Governor’s inaction on crucial education bills.
