The Supreme Court’s recent ruling requiring the removal of stray dogs from the Delhi-NCR area has created a financial dilemma for the MCD. Implementing this order is estimated to cost around ₹11 crore daily. This includes essential services such as feeding, transportation, and providing medical care. The MCD is now under pressure due to this additional financial burden. The court’s directive presents logistical challenges, with a daily cost of approximately ₹110 per dog. This expense covers various aspects of care, including food, transport, cleaning, medical attention, staff, and utilities. The MCD is in the process of determining the scope of the project and identifying potential shelter locations. The initial focus will be on specific categories of dogs. The MCD currently spends ₹1,000 on sterilizing each dog, with over 350 dogs being sterilized daily. The court has instructed the involved regions to construct shelters for a minimum of 5,000 dogs within a set timeframe. To track the dogs, the MCD is planning to use microchipping. A large shelter is being considered in Ghogha Dairy, while other locations like Dwarka Sector 29 are also being assessed. The practical feasibility of accommodating all the dogs remains a concern.
