The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to restructure the security detail for the Vice President, shifting the primary responsibility to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This move encompasses all aspects of the Vice President’s security, including his residence, accommodation, surrounding areas, and mobile protection. Previously, the Delhi Police were solely responsible for the Vice President’s security. The Delhi Police’s role is now limited to providing security outside the Vice President’s residence and managing vehicle access.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a directive to the CRPF, instructing them to secure the Vice President according to the guidelines outlined in the Blue Book 2025. The CRPF was also instructed to keep the Ministry informed about the implementation of these security measures.
The directive detailed that the CRPF would manage all security aspects related to the Vice President, including his residence, lodging, and mobile security, adhering to the protocols defined in the Blue Book-2025. Entry security and the immediate surroundings of the residence would remain the responsibility of the Delhi Police.
The Vice President is provided with Z+ security, a highly sophisticated security arrangement. This involves around 50 security personnel working in shifts, ensuring comprehensive protection for the Vice President’s residence and motorcade. Z+ security is the second highest level of security in India, second only to the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover provided to the Prime Minister and their family.
The Blue Book, a comprehensive security manual issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, provides specific guidelines for the protection of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. Security protocols for VIPs are determined by this manual, which also details the number of security personnel and their operational procedures.
It’s worth noting that CP Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the 15th Vice President on Tuesday. He secured 452 votes in the election, while his opponent, B. Sudarshan Reddy, received 300 votes. Radhakrishnan previously served as the Governor of Maharashtra and represented Coimbatore in Parliament twice. He began his association with the RSS at the age of 16.
