With the convergence of Muharram and the Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh, authorities have heightened security protocols. The state, encompassing areas like Sambhal, Lucknow, and Moradabad, is witnessing increased police presence and surveillance to maintain order and prevent any disturbances.
Large processions mark Muharram in several regions. Police forces have been strategically positioned, and surveillance is being conducted through drones and CCTV cameras. Sambhal’s District Magistrate, Dr. Rajender Pensiya, elaborated on peace initiatives, including discussions with community representatives to resolve issues. The deployment includes magistrates and police at procession sites, ‘box format’ management, extensive CCTV coverage, and drone surveillance. Over 900 individuals face potential bans, and Section 163 is active.
Lucknow’s Old Lucknow area is under enhanced security. DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava detailed a multi-layered security approach, with box formations accompanying processions, route management, and security at key locations. The area is equipped with numerous CCTV cameras, Civil Defence volunteers, and various drone types. The social media team is actively engaged with religious leaders.
In Moradabad, the administration is focused on ensuring both observances proceed peacefully. District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh mentioned Peace Committee meetings and instructions related to processions. Kanwar Yatra route preparations include road improvements and camera installations, along with measures to ban individuals with problematic pasts and regulate DJ volumes.
