In a significant urban sanitation effort, Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) conducted an extensive eight-hour cleanliness drive, resulting in the collection of over 599 tonnes of waste. Sarvagnanagar Assembly Constituency has been awarded the first prize of ₹1 lakh, having been recognized as the cleanest zone during this large-scale operation.
The cleanliness campaign, initiated by BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar, spanned a vast area of around 95 km across seven key divisions: Hebbal, Pulikeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
To encourage proactive civic engagement, awards were instituted for the best-performing divisions. A thorough assessment mechanism, including inspections with Chief Engineers and collaboration with RWAs and local bodies, ensured transparency and community involvement in evaluating the efficacy of the cleaning efforts.
The drive’s objectives included clearing various types of debris, silt, and fallen tree branches, alongside the deep cleaning of roads, footpaths, central medians, public parks, and drainage systems.
This monumental effort required the coordinated deployment of over 4,200 pourakarmikas and dedicated volunteers. The collected waste comprised a substantial 275 tons of construction debris, 210 tons of dry waste, 86 tons cleared from vacant plots, and 28 tons of household items removed from sidewalks.
At a recognition ceremony, Sarvagnanagar was celebrated with a ₹1,00,000 prize. Byatarayanapura secured the second prize of ₹50,000, and Yelahanka received ₹25,000 for their efforts. Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar highlighted the dual aims of the initiative: cultivating a pristine environment and elevating public consciousness regarding hygiene maintenance.
