Punjab’s Ropar range Deputy Inspector General, Harcharan Bhullar, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a dramatic sting operation. The high-ranking officer was caught in the act of accepting a bribe, marking a major success for the anti-corruption agency. The CBI initiated its operation following a complaint that led to an extensive investigation. Sources indicate that Bhullar had allegedly set up a mechanism to solicit bribes over an extended period. The arrest took place as he was receiving ₹5 lakh, allegedly part of a larger demand from a complainant based in Fatehgarh Sahib. This complainant reportedly approached the CBI, detailing how the DIG requested a significant amount of money to settle a case. The arrangement for the bribe payment, described as the first installment, was made at the DIG’s Mohali office. The CBI responded promptly to this information, conducting a raid that resulted in Bhullar’s on-the-spot apprehension. The agency also conducted searches at Bhullar’s residences in Ropar and Chandigarh, as the investigation into corruption widens. This action comes after the CBI had intensified its surveillance efforts for about ten days, targeting officials accused of accepting illegal gratifications.
