Authorities in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, are investigating a serious incident at a government hospital’s ICU where two newborns were bitten by rats. The newborns, who were born last week, were being cared for in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH) hospital. The nursing staff discovered injuries on the infants, prompting an immediate response from the hospital administration.
CCTV footage revealed the presence of rats in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where the babies were located. The incidents occurred on Monday and Tuesday. Hospital superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav confirmed that one infant was bitten on the fingers and another on the head and shoulder. Both babies had health complications from birth. One of the newborns was found abandoned in the Khargone district and was subsequently brought to MYH for care. The hospital reports that both newborns are currently in stable condition.
Preventive measures are being taken to address the issue, including installing protective grills to prevent rats from entering the premises. Families are also instructed not to bring food inside the wards.
